Epidemiology

Filoviridae. It is the third Ebola virus that can cause large-scale human epidemics, following Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) and Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV). BDBV is a single negative-strand RNA virus with a genome of approximately 19 kb, encoding 7structural proteins and 2 non-structural proteins. The incubation period of BDBV infection is 2–21 days (average 6.3 days). Its symptoms are highly similar to those of other Ebola viruses and cannot be distinguished by clinical manifestations alone. In August 2007, an outbreak of unexplained viral hemorrhagic fever occurred in the Bundibugyo District of western Uganda. It was identified as a new Ebola virus and named Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV). There were 93 suspected cases, 56 confirmed cases, and 37 deaths (case fatality rate 25%). In 2012, another outbreak occurred in Orientale Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with 38 confirmed cases and 13 deaths (case fatality rate 34%). In May 2026, the WHO declared the current BDBV outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). As of May 20, there were 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths.
