Legionella pneumophila is a flagellated, gram-negative, short coccobacillus of the Legionella genus polymorphic. Legionella pneumophila is a facultative parasitic bacterium that can invade amoeba or human macrophages. The infectivity of this bacterium is greatly enhanced in the presence of antibodies and serum complement (but the presence of both is not absolutely required). Legionella pneumophila is an important pathogen causing epidemic and sporadic community-acquired pneumonia and hospital-acquired pneumonia, accounting for approximately 80% of Legionella pneumonia. Legionella pneumophila mainly exists in water and soil. Absorption of contaminated water and soil into the human body in the form of aerosol may be the main route of Legionella infection. At present, the main methods for laboratory detection and diagnosis of Legionella pneumophila are bacterial culture and serological assay.
