Epidemiology
Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a common acute infectious disease in children. It mostly occurs in children under 5 years old, and can cause herpes on the hands, feet, mouth and other parts, and a small number of children can cause complications such as myocarditis, pulmonary edema, aseptic meningoencephalitis, etc. Individual children with serious illnesses deteriorate rapidly and are prone to death if not treated promptly.
Currently, 108 serotypes of enteroviruses have been found, which are divided into four groups: A, B, C and D. Enteroviruses that cause HFMD are various, but enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CoxA16) are the most common and in addition to HFMD, can cause serious central nervous system complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid paralysis.

Recommended extraction reagent: Macro & Micro-Test Viral DNA/RNA Kit (HWTS-3017) (which can be used with Macro & Micro-Test Automatic Nucleic Acid Extractor (HWTS-EQ011)) by Jiangsu Macro & Micro-Test Med-Tech Co., Ltd. The extraction should be carried out according to the instruction manual. The extracted sample volume is 200μL, and the recommended elution volume is 80μL.
Recommended extraction reagent: Macro & Micro-Test Sample Release Reagent (HWTS-3005-8). The extraction should be carried out according to the instruction manual. The extraction samples are oropharyngeal swabs or herpes fluid samples of patients which collected on site. Add the collected swabs directly to the Macro & Micro-Test Sample Release Reagent, vortex and mix well, place at room temperature for 5 minutes, take out and then invert and mix well to obtain the RNA of each sample.
Recommended extraction reagent: QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit (52904) by QIAGEN or Nucleic Acid Extraction or Purification Reagent (YDP315-R). The extraction should be carried out in strict accordance with the instruction manual.
